Annoyingly, colour does not help when it comes to identifying Blue-banded Bees. The black mark down the hind leg tells me she is a female. Then the yellow colour alongside the eye indicates she is A. asserta. It would not be possible to tell the males apart in the same way. In fact, it can be quite difficult to separate males from photos. (Easy with a hand lens and a specimen in a bag.)
