User's notes

Well, the case was about 15mm long, caterpillar probably much smaller. Was walking in the middle of the front doorstep, so i picked it up and placed it on this small branch, so of course it retracted. When i came back 15 mins later it had vanished.

Haha, yes, well I already have one in a jar (different species) which is still alive, and eating after over a month. Waiting to see how I go with that one before i try another. And as it was on the doorstep, not on a plant, I don't have a clue what it might want to eat!

That is an interesting specimen: I could find no photos on the web of case moths covering their cases with pebbles like this.

The best that can be done for a caterpillar found on walkabout is to put several different types of plant leaves in the jar, and see if it eats any. Some Caterpillar species are very fussy, and many will eat only one particular type of plant. The five basic common caterpillar foods are:
•Gum leaves,
•Wattle leaves,
•Herbaceous plant leaves,
•Grass, and
•Lichen.
If an unknown Caterpillar rejects all five, then rose petals and thinly sliced apple are good standbys.
