I haven't seen them in these numbers for years and I'm not seeing similar masses elsewhere

Agree Anoplognathus, but may not be A. montanus, which usually has a tuft of hairs attached to the end of the abdomen. Will investigate further. Good to see that Christmas beetles still exist in numbers somewhere!
