When I went back a few days later they had all disappeared, so I couldn't see if they developed 'hats' of discarded skin. Maybe some birds had a good feed.

That's why you should take a small plastic bottle with you when you out photographing, because usually the only way to identify a caterpillar is to rear it. Photographs of unreared caterpillars are tantalisingly useless.
