This magnificent specimen was collected by the cat. Mercifully, we recovered it relatively unharmed and released it in the garden.

The size and markings suggest to me a Cossid Moth Endoxyla, perhaps E. eucalypti.

Certainly could have been E. eucalypti, judging by the available photos online – it had a very large, striped abdomen (grey with reddish stripes).
