seen on a large Gum Tree look like cocoons, soft to the touch, each one was about 25mm

These look like Eurybrachidae (planthopper) egg sacs; not 'Lachnodius'.

Best way to confirm would be to gently lift one of the covers up to see what is underneath. The Eurybrachidae egg sac I found in Brisbane had small, oval-shaped, pale green-coloured eggs underneath the cover.
