If this is in natural bushland, I am fairly sure of the ID.
Were the leaves sharp pointed? Were the bases of the flowers extremely hairy? Was the bark on the trunk, if the shrub/tree was old enough, papery, shedding in strips or flakes? Do yo have a phoyograph of a nut?
