I think there were pores, white coloured, on the underside of the cap and the stem coarse and pitted with indentations like small caves. Someone who I showed the photos of the mushroom to thought that it was probably an edible mushroom (although they don't usually get so big) but I can't remember what they called it. They said it usually grows at the base of pine trees although this one wasn't.
