Great record for this species, thanks for submitting it. Your butterfly is a female. Is this a long-established site for Fiery Copper or have you only just noticed/found them?

This may be a long-established site, as the Bursaria have been here for a very long time! The butterflies caught my eye, as they were near our house, so I decided to spend some time trying to get a photo. They were not very helpful in keeping still or landing, so it took a few tries! I am slowly trying to build up our CNM photo catalogue of taxa to be identified, including many older photos we have. Sandra :)

Thanks Sandra for the info - good on you for persevering for a photo! In addition to needing bursaria, Fiery Coppers also need the presence of an ant colony (specifically Notoncus ants), so even if the bursaria has been there a long time, the ants may not have.

Thanks for the info. I can vouch there are plenty of ants in the vicinity, having been bitten many times whilst taking photos!
