The cross-section shows the upper, mature and lower, immature zones within a fruit body. In Photo 2 arrow 1 points to very pale, immature ‘grains’ (the peridioles), each clearly distinct from its neighbours and none yet containing mature spores; at 2 spores are well on the way to maturity within each peridiole and at 3 peridiole walls have largely disintegrated and soon all that would be left are the powdery spores that will be exposed to dispersal by wind and water when the outer casing disintegrates. In Photo 3 you see three fruit bodies in situ. Several more were scattered in the surrounding 2 or 3 square metres.
