Do these guys have a noxious flavour? I once saw a trapdoor spider grab one and then just as quickly release it and let it go.

Most Darkling beetles (Tenebrionidae) have glands in the rear end that discharge defensive chemicals. That probably explains why the spider had second thoughts.
