My rule of thumb is that if the mid-rib on the underside of the leaf is below the in-rolled margins, it is H. calycina. If it is "raised" - level with or protruding above the margins it is H. riparia. (ie "r" for raised and for riparia - helps to remember which is which!) . The Flora of NSW shows diags.

I should have qualified my comment and said that it's what I look for in the immediate area - ie between H. calycina and H. riparia. But..... locally (although I've only seen it at Bendora Dam so far) is H. serpyllifolia which Julie Lindner drew to my attention. It has similar leaves but the carpels are hairy not glabrous. Also, recently, we found H. pedunculata near Dalton. Again, similar leaves but hairy carpels. So really you have to start with the first part of the key, looking at the carpels/stamens to decide which Group you are in.

I have added some photos (Feb 2015) to show the leaf and cross section. Raised rib indicates H. riparia. There was only one flower at this time of year and I decided not to sacrifice it to Science, though I took a photo.
