These are actually a saprophytic(?) weed. It's called Orobanche minor.

I pull these out by grabbing the base and the whole root thing usually pulls out in one go fully intact, then I just go dump them somewhere. I'm pulling them out all the time, but have noticed less of them this year in areas where there were lots (that I pulled out) last year.
