Just saw this one Fran. Lovely sighting!!! I am not sure how to tell the difference between P. rutifolius and P. subglandulosus. David N should be able to help...

Aaron, you need a 10x loupe to look at the hairs on the pinnae: ssp subglandulosus has tiny glands on the tips of the hairs, but not easy or even possible by eye. I have seen both species along the Molonglo Gorge. For most purposes, the ordinary one is probably what we should list, and leave it to the botanists to make the subtle distinctions.

Just to clarify, the glandular hair variety is a sub-species, Pleurosorus rutifolius ssp. subglandulosus

Further comment: the photo is nearly good enough to distinguish whether the hairs have glandular tips. I am starting to think they might.

Interesting David, thanks for looking at this one. Well, my thoughts are when it comes to ferns, you are the best we've got. So happy to go with your recommendation and the other thing is we can always re-confirm a sighting later if the opinion or ID changes etc. (E.g. from additional photos uploaded or another opinion). Michael M, any other thoughts??

Yes I have gone back to photos I have either rejected or tentatively mis-identified following herbarium inspection of specimens, or after photos of identifying features have later been added
