CANBERRA NATURE MAP ASSOCIATION - PLEASE JOIN

An association of Canberra Nature Map users and moderators has been established to facilitate social and educative interactions, and to provide administrative, supervisory and collegial support of our volunteer moderators. Ideally we would like all moderators and as many contributors as possible to be members of the Association and for some of you to assist in running the Association and social events.

To become a member and vote at the AGM you need to send a “yes I want to be a member” message to secretary.cnnn@gmail.com Be sure to include your personal name and CNM username with the email.

For various reasons a proposed AGM of the Association in October has now been postponed till late February – Early March 2026.    As a confirmed member of the Association you will receive direct but periodic correspondence about the Association’s activities.

The Association does not have any involvement with the running or funding of the NatureMapr platform, that is the role of Aaron Clausen’s private company. Association activities are likely to include the publication of the newsletter, field visits, social events, identification nights for particular categories, school and other community events and moderator group get togethers. The Association is also able to apply for funding for environmental education and conservation management purposes. Funded activities could include organising site recording visits to particular properties (Bioblitzes),  funding of a supervisor within a biological institution to support  new moderators, or targeted surveys for particular species.

The Association needs members to put their hands up for committee and organising positions. The committee membership and positions will be up for re-election at the AGM. Further information will be sent out to members later.  The list of people who are on the current committee are: President: Michael Bedingfield, Treasurer: Michael Mulvaney, Secretary: Emma Collins. Other Committee members:
Kim Pullen, Ian Baird, Stuart Harris, Ciaran Ernst-Russell, Yumi Callaway. Note that this committee also represents the Canberra Nature Map website community and the Canberra Nature Map ParkCare Group. At this stage the most important thing for people to do is to register as mentioned above if you wish to be a member of the new Association.

Hey guys
You do great work. This announcement is 'hidden' and I stumbled across it after a few beers (lol). There is a lot of love for you guys, in Canberra at least, so you should reach out by asking people, ie whoever is registered, if they want to join rather than hiding away your request. At the moment this is an ask from a part of the website that I suspect people don't visit much.
Also I don't see a Donate button anywhere. I think a lot of people would be on board with putting a few dollars your way. Down the track a gentle an annual reminder about annual fees would be helpful. Some people have become a bit of a personality through NatureMapr so those at a minumum may be inclined to financially support you.
You are too valuble.
thank you

Thanks Greg - yes we do intend to make a more direct approach - but just need to check a few things first

Hi Greg, and thanks for your feedback. The way the system works, you should have received an email notification of this announcement. Did you not receive an email about it? Regards, Michael

On the home page, when I go to Community, Announcements neither of these announcements are there...

You have to fluke getting to the Canberra Community, then these 2 local announcements are there. Going to one of the pics at the top eg Whisling Kite, and then going to Community, brings up the local community.

Hi MB, to get the local Canberra and Southern Tablelands announcements, sightings etc folks need to go to https://canberra.naturemapr.org (not https://naturemapr.org). FYI no email received here either.

Hi Barbara, the CNM AGM announcement was for the CNM community region only, therefore it will not be seen from the national community page, so it is quite logical. I was mostly interested in whether or not people received the email notification for the announcement, because if not we have a system problem. Thanks Owen, you have confirmed once more that the emails didn't go to all CNM members. CC @AaronClausen

Hi Michael
The page I'm on now, which I came to from an email about this issue, is https://naturemapr.org/announcements/591#latest which is national. And the Community dropdown is national. Where I usually come in is https://canberra.naturemapr.org with the local community dropdown and announcements. There does not seem to be an easy way to get from the national page to the CNM one.
So finding the local community stuff can be tricky. Barbara

I agree that there is not an easy way to get from the national pages to the CNM front page. But the Announcement is present on the CNM front page "https://canberra.naturemapr.org/". Regards.

You need to let people know that Canberra and National NatureMapr Network Incorporated is now registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission ACNC and has Deductible Gift Recipient DGR status. When do you want my tax-deductible gift, small though it might be?

I am interested in this, but is it still relevant now that NatureMapr is scheduled to close according to the pop up on the top of my screen?
Also, can you please provide some information as to what has happened to lead to a decision to close NatureMapr? (I am hoping this is a cruel hoax!)

Trevor the costs are high and Governments were not willing to pay the amount needed to keep it going. Nor was it realistic that costs could be covered by user donations or grants. Canberra Nature Map (including ACT and the surrounding shires) will continue to run till 2029/2030 and we hope that the association will have a role beyond that facilitating local collection, identification and social interaction via Inaturalist or other platforms operating locally.

@MichaelBedingfield I haven't gotten announcement messages in years despite having that on and have also only just stumbled across this announcement, for example. I had reported it as a bug probably heading back at least 6 months - year ago.
