Wildflower walk to the Sentry Box

Hi everyone, in the spirit of meeting some new faces and documenting some new areas we are hoping to organise a walk to the Sentry Box in Namadgi National Park later this year. This walk will take us to the rooftop of Namadgi to see rare alpine wildflowers, spectacular views and ancient rock formations!

A few specifics:

  • The prospective dates are the 19th or 20th of November (the exact date will be chosen closer to the time based on weather conditions).
  • The walk is a day climb which will take between 6 and 8 hours to complete.
  • The walk is a minimum of 10km, to a maximum of 14km depending on which summits are visited.
  • There are no trails in this area, so all walking will be off track in medium density scrub, though much of this has been cleared by the 2019/2020 fires.
  • The total climb for this walk is around 650m and the gradient is quite steep in places.
  • The route will go up to Sentry Box rock (a five metre tall monolith), but may also incorporate the summits of Sentry Box west & east should time allow.
  • The Sentry Box is home to some of Namadgi’s most unique subalpine habitats and harbours many locally and nationally rare plant species including Namdgi tea-tree, alpine wattle, shining westringia and the elusive dwarf violet.
  • The dates for this walk coincide with the flowering times for many subalpine orchids which we will hopefully encounter as we ascend.
  • In accordance with good hiking practice numbers for this walk will be limited to 10 people.

We understand that a walk like this isn’t for everyone but are hoping that there are enough people interested to make the trip worthwhile. At this stage we are looking to gauge interest and potential numbers to see if we can go ahead. If this is something you are interested in please let us know by commenting below this post or sending us a message. Your contacts for this walk are Ciaran Ernst-Russell (Username Tapirlord), and Matthew Frawley.

I'd definitely be up for a walk up Sentry Box. It's a beautiful part of the world and there's some pretty cool stuff there too. Hopefully this time I won't fall into a creek huh Ciaran ;)
