User's notes

Street tree, probably planted 40-50 years ago. What is striking is that they are flowering en masse this year

Eucalyptus elata seems to be most likely other possibility is Eucalyptus nicholii

The location looks wrong. The background of the photo is Launceston Street where Eucalyptus mannifera ssp. maculosa was planted. Of course there could have been changes from the original.

The location has been corrected. E. mannifera ssp maculosa (brittle gum) is not the street tree of Launceston street - they were planted in the background (have taken photos if required). The trees in question (E. elata?) were planted as the street tree and along the middle strips. I have added a picture of the nuts. We think it is E. elata because the trunk is not smooth, strips of bark hang down from the canopy and the top branches are smooth. The trees are healthy, no die back of branches and lovely flowering.

I was going by http://www.woodcraftguild.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/ACT-STREET-TREES.pdf which lists plantings up to 2001 according to Canberra Urban Parks and Places (now TCCS).

In the Woden area many of the street trees selections were not the best. Also it is easy to get tube stock confused etc, etc. Some streets seemed to just get "mixed leftovers", some of which died.

Yep, definitely elata based on the fruits. It is flowering like mad on the south coast at the moment too.
