This ant is likely to be a "princess" who has mated and lost her wings, and is now looking for a place to dig a hole and start a new colony. It could be Iridomyrmex purpureus (Meat Ant) but can't be sure. The back of the ant is much bigger than an ordinary worker as it has big muscles to power the wings.

There were lots of meat ants around, with a nest nearby. I wasn't sure it was the same species as it looked so much different.
