The ants were cleaning around the entrance to the nest opening. Do they have just one entrace, or or multiple ones to a colony?

Great photos Roger. Aphaenogaster do have multiple nest entrances to a colony, often the entrances vary widely in size and shape. Cheers, Jon

Thanks Jon. This is he first time that I had noticed funnel ants at the entrance to their colonies.
