One of the four groups of hexapods (six-legged arthropods), the others being insects, diplurans and proturans. Diplurans, proturans and collembolans differ from insects in having internal mouthparts. Collembolans have six or fewer abdominal segments and possess a tubular appendage, which ventrally from the first abdominal segment. Most species have an abdominal, tail-like appendage which is folded under the body and is used for jumping.
