Interesting you should say that because I did wonder whether it could be a Black Jezebel but convinced myself it was an Imperial Jezebel. Suzi will be the arbiter on that one.

They are very similar. Just checked my book again ... still looks more like nigrina than harpalyce to me. But I am just comparing pictures (rather than knowing what I am talking about). However nice to get a definitive ID that doesn't rely on my (pretty much) total lack of knowledge.

I'll definitely be interested to see which species she decides that it is. I haven't seen D nigrina before, so that would be a first for me.

Yeah well I am totally confused. My initial comment was based on looking at the images in Common and Waterhouse (1972). This morning I checked photos of a private butterfly collection and this has put doubts in my mind. It is more like one of the harpalyce in that collection than the nigrina. But also almost like a cross between the two. Ouch.
