H.japonicum usually has evenly spaced ovate leaves in whorls of 3 or 4, while H.gramineum has more triangular leaves that finish to a point usually in pairs. :)
There are two distinct sizes of native Hypericum at Nangus and these are the smaller ones. I can see they don't fit some of the description of H. japonicum very well. NSW FloraNet says "Variable taxon requiring investigation. Also, intermediate forms sometimes occur between H. gramineum and H. japonicum." I have some of these small ones growing here in my garden - I'll get some to a botanist and see what she thinks.
