The ant was sighted struggling across a road in the cold and pouring rain. Thanks to Marcus Leach for the initial sighting.

Hi Tim, I can't see an orange tip on the last segments of the abdomen as appear in most other images of tarsata I've found. I think it is more likely Myrmecia pyriformis. Happy to be corrected by a more learned expert.

Good ID Alison, but don't be too hard on yourself Tim - once again we have a couple of ants which are very similar, but M. pyriformis is the better ID as M. tarsata typically has a red tip to the gaster (as Alison notes) and the mandibles are typically yellowish (much lighter than the colour of the body).
