There was a cacophony of gentle tapping around me as I took this photo - so many little birds eating whatever insects are living on these leaves.

Lovely photos. I know the sound you are talking about. They are feeding on lerps, which are very common on Blakely's Red Gums in our region. More info on lerps here: https://www.abc.net.au/news/rural/2016-06-16/insects-attack-nsw-central-west-gum-trees/7517754
