It does look like there a bit of red reflected from the eye, but it must be an artefact because everything else agrees with a male M. maculariformis.

Yes it does have a brow of orange hair. The male of M. maculariformis has orange hair on the face and on the end of the abdomen, but M. aurifrons males have almost white hair in those places. The female M. aurifrons has bright orange hair on the face, but the shape of the abdomen tell us this is a male. The way he is holding his wings is typical of leaf-cutters but not of resin bees. But the conclusive evidence is the shiny orange bulb on the front tarsus. The only species you would find in Canberra that has this bulb is M. maculariformis.
