It is impossible to tell Euphorbia dallacyana from Euphorbia drummondii without examining the bases of the seed cases and the stipules at the bases of the leaves; or the surface of the seeds, with a dissecting microscope (x 20).

We have a microscope (not dissecting) and I am not sure I have the skills! Is our sighting likely to be a native or exotic?

It is a native. An ordinary microscope usually magnifies at a minimum of x 100, which is far too high. Using a dissecting microscope or a fixed lens with its own illumination means that you can handle the specimen while looking at it. There used to be a couple of such microscopes in the room next to the Friends Lounge at the botanic gardens. The other thing you can do is press it between newspaper and take it into the gardens for them to ID. I used to use about ten sheets of newspaper on each side. If you do not have a plant press, a heavy book is good to weight it down. It might take a month or two till it is quite dry. With a non-juicy plant like this, there is no need to change the paper.
