This is a male Woodland Tussock Skink Pseudemoia entrecasteauxii. You can just see the remains of a red breeding season stripe on his side. They breed in autumn and the females carry sperm over winter and are able to have their eggs fertilized as soon as winter is over without having to waste energy on mating. It also means both the male and female can start to recover from many months of 'hibernation' without having to compete with other individuals for the attention of a female.
