Thanks for the sighting Marthijn. Nice photo! We would appreciate if you could use your best estimate for abundance, rather than a range, for birds. For example, 18, rather than 16-100. This is to fit in with best practice for bird survey data. Cheers, Sandra

Hi Sandra, could you tell me how the abundance is defined? Is it the number seen from one spot (i.e. without the observer moving) or the number in the general area (say a few hundred by a few hundred meters)? In the first case, are you supposed to move a little bit at a time and put in multiple sightings? Thanks, Marthijn.

Normally (say for eBird) it would depend on the type of bird survey you were doing; e.g. 2ha 20 min or incidental etc. For the purpose of CNM we don't have a set survey type and as CNM sightings are for an individual species at a specified time and place, they are treated as incidental sightings. Observations that involve no time or distance/area components are classified as incidental sightings. Hope that helps.

Thanks, I guess I did the right thing then, as my number estimate was for the general area, not for the number seen simultaneously at one exact location.

Yes, one sighting for the general area is fine but we would prefer that you specify a single number instead of the range. Less problematic for Yellow-faced HE which are often seen moving in very large groups but the difference between a group of 16 and 100 of another species would be a different matter. No other bird data platform uses a range, so picking a single number as your best estimate allows for better cross-platform compatibility.
