Helen, a pair have been nesting on a roundabout in Belconnen over the past several years. They often have multiple nesting attempts each year. Usually three chicks will hatch and be around for a couple of weeks. You are absolutely correct that getting them off is a major challenge for the parents. The biggest problem is actually the chicks getting up the curb on the other side.. but they often don't last long once they are off the "island", and only once have I seen them bring an almost fully grown youngster back with them for another nesting attempt.
Thanks Christine, that's really interesting. It would be great to be able to stop the traffic when it's time but that would be a major undertaking! And then there's the foxes and cats in that area. At least the Lapwings are not rare
