I cannot tell the difference between P. latifissella nd P. protecta. ANIC has placed many local specimens under P. protecta, and I think this record is the same species as the ones we have identified as P. protecta in CNM.
BOLD BINS illustrate the problem rather than resolve it. 2 P. protecta and 2 P. latifissella have barcodes. Three of them are put in one tight BIN and one P. latifissealla in another BIN. I cannot see any difference between the two P. latifissella specimens. I think we should treat the CNM specimens as P. protecta.
Common puts P. latifissella in the P. mathematica group, and P. protecta in the P. hydara group. The former have short spines on the costa of valva in the male genitalia, and the latter are without spines on the costa of the valva. The superficial similarities of P. latifissella and P. protecta appear to be just convergent evolution.
