Michael there are at least two species of Gazania weedy in south-east Australia. G. linearis and G. rigens. Both have several cultivars and there are hybrids so they are difficult to tell apart. G. linear is more common inland and G. rigens tends to be coastal. G. rigens has short creeping above ground stems, on which leaves are clustered or alternate. Flowers tend to be Orange to deep yellow. They form large thick clumps. G. linearis has underground stems and leaves rise from the ground in rosettes they tend to have flowers that are yellow or reddish but can be bronze. I think that this is G. linearis.

I went out to Corin Dam the other day and saw the ACT Parks sign about an orange daisy that they were asking to be reported as a weed. Is this the same species??

Aaron, this is a common garden plant that has a tendency to wander. The flower in the photo is not at its best.

Actually both species of Gazania appear to be in this photo

Hi Michael M, what is the main difference between the 2 species?
   21 Oct 2021
Gazania rigens has straight unloaded leaves, Gazania linearis has lobed leaves

Sorry to be a nuisance, but the photo & descriptions for Gazania linearis, says it has both lobed & unlobed:

Yes I have seen that and it is wrong - I think like we they thought originally there was only one species of Gazania in Australia but see

PS __more contratictory evidence__ there are hundreds of Gazanias in my neighbourhood. I just dug up one from my lawn & it has both lobed & unlobed leaves, just like in plantnet.

It seems to be true that Gazania rigens has lanceolate leaves, but G. linearis has both lanceolate & lobed. See sighting 4401092, Gazania x splendens (Gazania)
