Hi Alison - do you have any other photos of this one, even poor quality, from slightly different angles. The overall look of this suggests Tau Emerald but the apparent points to the final abdominal markings and the colour of the eyes are suggestive of Australian Emerald. Facial features are too side-on to tell. Lighting can also make some features appear rather differently. Right now both Tau and Australian Emeralds are out, and can occur together and be easily confused (yesterday I saw three Taus and one Australian at a small farm dam - the Australian in that situation was a bit of a surprise!). At the moment I'm not prepared to definitively go one way or the other.

I have several other photos or poor quality but mostly from the same angle. I did however, think this dragonfly seemed smaller than I would expect from the Tau Emerald. A couple of larger ones flying about, but not coming close enough. Will try to go back for better photos.

Just noticed that if you zoom in you can just make out a metallic sheen to the frons, so I'm happy to call this an Australian Emerald.
