The ant was crossing the path; there was no visible nest nearby.

Definitely a Polyrhachis, but may not be P. ammon. There are others in the genus that are similar.

Hi Kim, I thought that the shape and form of the thorax suggest that P. ammon was the most likely. But perhaps we should change it to Polyrachis sp. just to be sure. What do you think?

Yes, calling it 'Polyrachis sp.' might be safest. I'll try to find out what spp. have been recorded locally.
