I thought they would have been wiped out this year.

The site was only lightly burnt, so I had hoped they would survive. There was no sign last time I checked, 3 weeks ago, when leaves had already been up for 2 weeks in the eastern colony. There is nothing happening in the colony you found last year, which was similarly lightly burnt (assuming I was looking in the right place).

To be honest, I can't even find my colony now... I remember there were plants in the area, and the grass was green. There was fallen timber... I might not be able to find it until the regrowth has occurred and it resembles what it did when I found it.

But Matt, you are the helmet hunter. Get back on your game please.

Leaves of nearby (also burnt) C. incurva colony coming up in early June and look quite different. I'm therefore happy that this is C. hispida.

I agree with C. hispida as the leaves look too advanced (in mid May) to be C. incurva
