How do you identify the different species of blackberry? There are about a dozen in the ACT, with the commonest being R. anglocandicans and R. leucostachys. They are all bundled together as R. fruticosus sp. agg. in Weeds of National Significance. The Weedspotter app lists only R. leucostachys so I have stopped recording blackberry. Plenty of it in Isaacs Ridge and Mount Mugga Mugga. Should I record some patches with suggested species R. fruticosus?

That's a good question, and my choice of species may well be wrong. I would be practical to have a universal name to cover all Blackberry species. I can't answer your question so I have referred it to Michael Mulvaney.

Guys we should try and identify Blackberries to the species level utilising the identification Key of the NSW plantnet. The Census of Vasucular planst of the ACT lists three exotic Rubus species of which R. anglocandicans and R. leucostachys are the only common species. A main difference between the two is the archy shrubby shape of anglocandicans and that is has furrowed stems on new canes, while leucostachys is more spreading and its new canes are unfurrowed. Cheers
