The Highland Copperhead is one of three species of copperhead found in south-east Australia. The snake is usually has a blackish grey back and a cream belly. Sometimes it head is copper in colour and its back a golden brown colour with a darker stripe down the middle of its back. It may grow up to 1.25m in length. It is restricted to higher altitudes.

Distribution: Common at higher altitudes. The Atlas of Living Australia also shows a number of records of Lowland Copperhead (Austrelaps superbus) in the region. It has not been practical to distinguish between Highland and Lowland Copperheads.
