I'm wondering now if this was E. magenteus..

Was it near a body of water or in a wet patch?

No, open grassland with eucalypts. There was another cucullatus (white lateral sepals) nearby.

My understanding is that there's no reliable way to separate these two species other than by altitude. Do you happen to know what that was?

1180m, in a flat-ish area that leads up to a saddle SW that has a shallow creek line on the other side.

Above 1000 m makes it E. magenteus.

Thanks for your observational advice and ID Matt and Cath!

I didn't realise it was split based on altitude. I had hoped that it was, because I would otherwise only be able to split if the colour was deep magenta.

I'm sure it's not really as simple as above or below 1000 m and there would be local variations and overlaps, but E. magenteus is a higher altitude species.
