User's notes

These gang gangs (I heard at least one other bird), were on land that, two days later, is only 2km away from the Currowan fire. And tomorrow is to come (active fire heading west, hot weather forecast). My heart breaks as I contemplate the incalculable wildlife and habitat loss (potentially including these birds) - in the hundreds of thousands of hectares already lost, and the losses that are to come.

Lisa, take heart that in many areas the fire has been cool enough for it to be okay, and with time things will heal and that also goes for the Black Flat fire. I also feel terrible for the losses but as one of the NSW RFS volunteers who has been to the Braidwood fire and many other fires over the years, this comes from first hand experience. At Black Flat fire, I saw first hand that huge fire breaks were cleared in a way that large habitat trees were left for connectivity. That impressed me. Watching the raptors and kookaburras come to fires to hunt is also an amazing experience. Having also been through the Tathra fire as property owner, there can be much joy from watching the regrowth and regeneration after fire. I was so amazed at the amount of native vegetation of all types that came back with some rain (which always the best, and often the only fix for wildfire). I posted some of those sightings on Atlas of Life in the Coastal Wilderness and will continue to do so as things regenerate. Fires can be terrible but some good can be found within the bad. Take care, Sandra

Hi Sandra. Thank you so much - your observations are heartening! I am particularly interested in the connector habitat trees being retained during clearing. I noticed a number of raptors on my way to Braidwood, and wondered if it was related to the two fires around the town. Let's see what today brings. Thank you again.
