Hi Michael thank you so much for formally identifying this wonderful find. I was beside myself when I saw a little crop developing in one of the areas we have cleared of love grass and mulched. It is incredibly exciting for the Fowles St restoration project :)
Hi Alice, We've done a lot of regenerative work against love grass and other exotic grass species on our property and have found the native grasses will come back fairly quickly. It is really exciting and hope that you continue to find such gems. :) A tip from our experience (living in a major love grass area), love grass is not a fan of shade, so you can use fast growing Acacias as a way to help exclude love grass. Cheers, Sandra :)
Hi Sandra it is lovely to hear from you and lovely of you to take the time to share your knowledge😊 are u up in the Monaro ? I know the area has been hit hard by love grass...we are planning to plant out an area thick w love grass w a couple of acacias as an experiment to see which species if any is more effective in managing it. I will let you know how we go but it is great to hear you are succeeding that is very inspiring😊
Yes we are in the Monaro... in between Michelago and Bredbo. A good friend has said that when she hears "love grass", she thinks of me. ;) Being in the local RFS brigade we also spend a lot of time dealing with love grass and fire. Horrible stuff. Please do keep me in the loop with how you go. Always good to learn more about what works and what doesn't!
it is a very successful that love grass. It has some key advantages including its capacity to germinate at lower temperatures and therefore earlier then C4 native grasses and its ability to take up water faster then everything else hahaha I understand it does burn up to meter above itself and burns much hotter then the native grasses. pretty sobering really... If we come up with anything you will be the first to know :) take care with the fires and thank you for your RFS service to the community Sandra :)the project is on facebook as well - @acturbanwoodlandrescue :) cheers Alice
