This is an undescribed species of grasshopper. It is mentioned in Roger Farrow's book, "Insects of south-eastern Australia", page XI.

Roger is this an early instar? as it doesn't seem to have a clear cross on its back.

Oops. Thanks for pointing this out. Its the Apotropine grasshopper Genus Novum 18 sp 1 and features on page XI of my book. Should have looked more closely.

I'm not sure how we deal with unnamed species. Over to you.

Hi fellas
I've changed the name to Apotropis sp. (Undescribed) to fit in with previous way of dealing with undescribed species:
https://canberra.naturemapr.org/Community/Species/22151
Also I've added a bit of extra information on the species page, and an ALA reference.

Yes, it would be good to keep a lookout for this species that I have never seen since my record from Grassy Flat. Another reference to it is: page 159 in Rentz et al "A guide to Australian Grasshoppers and Locusts" where its described as rare and endangered. The only problem is that in the future it could be named in a new genus that is not Apotropis. There are 10 named genera in the tribe Apotropina (Including Perunga) and 4 undescribed Genus Novums.

It is a tricky one. When I searched on "Genus novum" the first thing that came up was spiders "Salticidae Genus novum". So I searched on "Genus novum grasshopper", and there were several results, eg:
http://orthoptera.speciesfile.org/Common/basic/Taxa.aspx?TaxonNameID=1107683

Perhaps I should call it "Genus novum 18 sp. 1 (Undescribed)", as per ANIC.

Yes I think that is probably better. Common name 'false apotropis'
