Found desiccated under tinned plate on which pet rabbit food is given. Area is sheltered under cubby house and has long grass (25cm) present.

This is a species of Legless Lizard (in the genus Delma). It is most likely Delma inornata. Do you know if the area around where you found it was once woodland? A similar species Delma impar only occurs in grasslands in or near areas that have always been grasslands (ie areas that never supported tree cover). However the specimen looks most like D. inornata. I will wait to see if you get other comments before confirming the id. Thanks for submitting the photo - they all help a lot with regional distributions. WillO.

Hi WillO. I have found a live adult Delma inornata at the same site a few years back (see pictures in my profile), so your suggestion of this species is consistent with this finding. I knew it was a legless lizard - I just didn't know if D. impar also occurred in the area. We are high up on what would have been an open woodland hill - unfortunately mostly pasture improved, but some interesting species still persist here as do some lovely old trees. Thanks!
