The leaves are the right shape and with what looks like a thick beige furry cover on the back in photo 2. They may be young plants or stunted. This species came up in the thousands after the 2003 fires. Has the area been disturbed?
No it is quite remote and no sign of any burn (as you can see by the fuel load). There is a bit of Lyre bird activity higher up on the ridge and signs of pigs rooting in upland bogs, but nowhere near where this was sighted.
