This is unlike any of the Cardamine I have seen around before, growing in a billabong type depression that is frequently under water for months but currently dry. Cardamine tenuifolia or moirensis seem to fit some aspects, both according to plantnet and Victorian flora key but neither are local - is this an exotic species?

I do not think it is Cardamine at all. The leaves are not dissected enough. It is impossible just from photos for me to determine what genus is could be.
I am not sure of current NSW collecting regulations. If it is not in State Forest or a State reserve, it used to be OK to collect without a permit. You could collect a couple of plants now including roots, and also wait till some of the pods have opened and some still have seeds, and collect again. Press your specimens between a minimum of six sheets of newspaper on each side and place eg a heavy book on top. They should dry out OK without your doing anything else. Herbaria object to drying specimens in a microwave. It breaks up the DNA.
On a trip to Canberra bring them to the desk in the visitor centre at the botanic gardens with a letter including the details of collection.
If that is not the current procedure, could someone please correct me.
