I am not very experienced at the id of chicks of this species but looking at the pictures in HANZAB I would id these as Dusky Moorhen rather than Coot chicks. Coot chicks have a black tip to the bill and Dusky Moorhen do not otherwise the chicks are very similar. Alison, did you see the chicks being fed? Chris

Hi Chris, you now have me questioning my memory. I remember thinking at the time that it was coot. There were no other birds around, only the one adult and the three chicks following into the reeds. I didn't get a photo of the adult as she dropped down into the weir, while the chicks stayed up top. However, checking other photos they do look more like Dusky moorhen chicks.
