Looking like a very slow start to the spider orchid season... Bush very dry, only two leaves found I what is usually a thriving spot. One of the leaves looks crusty and dry too.

The dry weather and cold nights is likely to both delay flowering and reduce orchid numbers.

Thanks Tony, I agree, areas which are normally loaded with healthy, strong young leaves at this time of year looked struggling today.

Aaron, I am finding reasonable development and expectations in those areas with natural moisture. Lower gullies and slopes etc. I am also seeing much damage from bird attack but do not have sufficient experience to know what is normal or otherwise.

Derek, that's really good to hear, definitely keep us posted on your spots. Funny thing about this orchid is that you can occasionally find them in very different conditions. E.g. the moist ones underneath shea oaks vs the ones in very dry/exposed rocky slopes.

Aaron, during winter I believe I am seeing a relationship between areas wet enough to promote moss and lichen growth and early orchid leaf growth. You can see the seepage areas but they not always where I would have expected i.e. not always a the bottom of a slop.

I observed species rich seepage sites often where a change of slope angle occurs (indicating perhaps a change of parent rock and different erosion).
