Significant sighting

MichaelMulvaney noted:

21 Feb 2017

Red Water-milfoil is a widespread species across mainland Australia, but its current ACT population seems to be less that 250 plants. Since 1985 it has only been recorded at 6 locations.

User's notes

In the Murrumbudgee River and upstream of Point Hut Crossing.

Now is a good time to see this plant. With the dry summer the Murrumbidgee River is now quite low. It is an aquatic plant which is mostly greenish when submerged, but dries out with a red colour when exposed to the air, just as in the photograph.

Myriophyllum verrucosum had been under-reported due to its inconspicuous nature and was on the Rare Plant list. As a consequence of Michael Mulvaney raising awareness of the significance of this sighting a survey of several sections the river was made. With the river being so low this season the plant was now easily visible. It was found to be actually quite common. See
http://canberra.naturemapr.org/Community/Species/3241
So Myriophyllum verrucosum will be removed from the Rare Plant list. This is a good example of the value of Canberra Nature Map.
