Hi Kim, Roger said the males have even bigger mandibles, and from the photos we pulled up on the web for this species, it did look like they could be a lot bigger than this one has.

I saw it clasped to a branch at the top of a Eucalyptus saxatilis about 3 m from the ground on a rocky outcrop. It was removed and placed on the ground for the photo.

In North Queensland and PNG populations some males have very large upwardly curved mandibles. These have sometimes been called a different species or even genus ('Neolamprima'). In fact there are 25 published species names for the eastern Australian Lamprima and another 4 for the WA one. The AFD recognises 7 spp altogether, but a taxonomist colleague says he thinks there is only one!
