Significant sighting

This is a vulnerable woodland bird across NSW, with sightings in the ACT only being a rare occurrence.

RyuCallaway, yep there is some similarities with a red rumped, but the colouration would suggest otherwise. It's almost certainly a Neophema and there looks to be too much blue on the wing, and not enough blue on the face to be a turquoise.

Hi Ollie,
Thanks for the note. Having had another closer look as well as comparing it with images online I think you may be right (initially I had only consulted the field guide). Unfortunately the neophemas are not a group of birds I am familiar with so will leave this for Chris Davey to confirm. This would be an exceptional record for the ACT.

This is a Turquoise Parrot, unusual for the area. According to Joe Forshaw (local international parrot expert) the bird is a juvenile female The pale lores is the key feature. Good record, and it seems that Turquoise Parrots are turning up a little more regularly in and around the ACT. I have recorded the species at the Kama Nature Reserve but that was a few years ago now.
