Probably OK. However, from what I can see, the leaves appear to have more than the three veins typical of Plantsgo gaudichaudii. Janet, plantago is difficult to ID even holding the plant in the hand. Closeups of leaves, stem and flowers, plus field notes of the colour of the hairs at the bases of the leaves, would make it a lot easier.

Thanks Betty. This was a bit of a punt as it was taken on ANPS Conference trip to Kowen last year. I thought that the flowers seemed rather long. I saw some P. gaudichaudi in Victoria recently and have been interested in Plantago mainly because it seemed to take so long for me to find my first non-native.

Betty, I had a look at another photo and I checked Plantnet and if 3 veins are definitive, it looks more like Plantago varia. I cannot see enough detail to answer your questions to be any more definitive.

The length:width ratio of the leaves is atypical for Plantago varia I am inclined to call it Plantago sp.

Andy has expressed an interest in going out to Kowen so will check it out.

Could you upload the extra photos you sent me to this sighting please. With the extra information in those photos it keys to Plantago debilis in both PlantNET and VicFlora. The hairy leaves and hairless keel on the flower sepals both indicate it is Plantago debilis. The flower spike in Plantago debilis can elongate to 30 cm according to Vicflora.

Thanks very much Betty. It's more robust than I thought the P. debilis would be!
