Eucalyptus dives was harvested for eucalyptus oil, reaching its peak in the Queanbeyan area as late as the 1950s. This is why many of the trees in the region are multi-stemmed recovering from harvest. you can read a bit of the history at

Very interesting Michael, there are patches of E.dives here on south facing slopes, in full flower at the moment, scenting the air. I guess I thought their mallee form was due to fire, as there are old Scribblies here that look as though they are fifty plus year old (?) mallee regrowth post fire.
Thanks for the link - the article mentions ringbarking - there is an old stone remains here that the neighbour calls an old ringbarkers hut, similar to ones he has seen around Googong.
